Background of the Study
Post-operative patient mobilization is a critical aspect of recovery, as it helps prevent complications such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, and pressure ulcers. Mobilizing patients after surgery is a responsibility that falls primarily on nurses, who are tasked with assisting patients in regaining their mobility as part of the recovery process (Abiola et al., 2024). Mobilization should begin as soon as it is medically safe to do so, and it is typically guided by established protocols that ensure patient safety while promoting recovery.
At Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, there is concern regarding nurses' adherence to post-operative patient mobilization protocols. Despite the benefits of early mobilization, some studies suggest that nurses may delay or neglect mobilizing patients due to factors such as insufficient staffing, lack of training, or perceived patient instability (Emenike et al., 2023). Non-adherence to mobilization protocols can lead to increased morbidity, longer hospital stays, and a slower recovery process for patients.
This study aims to investigate the adherence of nurses to post-operative patient mobilization protocols at FMC Asaba, assess the factors influencing their adherence, and recommend strategies to improve protocol compliance.
Statement of the Problem
Delayed mobilization after surgery can lead to serious complications, including deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and prolonged recovery. Nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, are responsible for ensuring that post-operative mobilization occurs promptly, but there may be challenges that prevent them from adhering to protocols. This study will investigate the adherence of nurses to these protocols and the factors that influence their practice.

Research Hypotheses

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in the surgical and post-operative care units of Federal Medical Centre, Asaba. Limitations include potential bias in self-reported data and the narrow focus on one hospital, which may limit generalizability.
